Say no to GM crops in Europe!!!

I have been e-mailing my MEPs about GM trials in Europe.

At least this one replied!!!!!!

Roger,

Thank you for your reply. Emotive language draws our attention away from the key points:

GM genes will undeniably stray away from even the most restricted planting areas.

These genes are entirely different from those developed 'since the dawn of agriculture'.

Their influence on existing gene pools cannot be predicted or controlled.

Organic farmers have their livelihoods threatened by the close proximity of these crops.

The wind, birds, animals and insects cannot be controlled even 'with appropriate bio-security measures in place'.

Cattle were fed with foodstuffs 'for many years with no credible evidence of harm' that were subsequently shown to be disastrous.

Animals were moved around the country 'for many years with no credible evidence of harm' until the foot and mouth outbreak.

The rapid growth of the organic movement and the interest in locally-provenanced meat and vegetables are examples of the concerrns increasingly being displayed by the public about the denatured food they have been offered for too long.

The powerful voices of big business make a persuasive case that GM crops hold answers to problems that we face. We must move from emotive langauge to a rational evaluation of the case before us, which I believe is overwhelming.

I hope that you are able to reconsider your position.

Rob

Dear Rob

Thank you for writing to me regarding GM crops.

As with any new technology, GM products need to be handled with care, and with appropriate bio-security measures in place. But in my view, the media campaign against "Frankenstein foods" is overblown. In principle, GM technology is just a more controlled way of doing what
plant and animal breeders have done since the dawn of agriculture.

GM crops, especially soya and maize, have been in use for many years with no credible evidence of harm. GM technology offers hope of feeding millions of poor and hungry people around the world, of combating climate change, and of helping with the production of bio-fuels.

It would be a mistake to abandon a technology which offers such promise for both food and fuel, although as I say it needs to be handled with care.

Thank you for raising the issue with me.

Yours sincerely
