Obscure ..?

Day #371

The evening air was rich and honey sweet. Such a privilege to briefly have care of a row of garden limes in full flower. Planted after WWII, they’re now over seventy years old. Towering cliffs of foliage. Vibrating with insects.

Nowhere better to site our moth light than at their feet.

The session didn’t disappoint with fifty three macro moths of twenty eight species. Cream of the crop were elephant, lime and poplar hawk moths! Superstars of the moth kingdom.

Obscure wainscot

I’ll surprise you then, perhaps, when I tell you that the real star amongst this stellar company was much more humble.

Rejoicing in the self-effacing name of obscure wainscot, we had not predicted that a wetland moth would appear up on our sandy hill. A first-ever record for the garden and not represented at all on the definitive Eakring Birds site.

A successful and enjoyable session.
