hanging around

Oh, the sweet smell of fresh garlic.

Our early garlic 'Marco' has finished now and has been lifted. The surplus soil has been rubbed off the roots and the empty ground tidied. Late carrots 'Autumn King' will follow.
To give onions and garlic the best chance of a long stored life, they must be dried good and hard. Here, they hang in the greenhouse and will stay. This drying process seems to eliminate rots and gives the bulbs a good tough dry skin. I will trim off the dried roots, then plait the stalks and then dance around the garden in my gingham dress.

The later garlic 'White Solent' is still vigorous and green and will keep going for a little longer.
