5,000,000 spuds wasted in UK each day!!!!!

As we are now in the very middle of our winter feasting season, it came as a rotten shock to discover how much food waste there is in this country.

The WRAP site brought this home like a great clunking fist.
The table below shows the top five of avoidable food waste.
This should be national headlines!

Well, if it's not worth reporting by the BBC, this blogger is determined to help get the message across.
5 million spuds, 4 million apples plus the wasted bananas, tomatoes and oranges.

Top 5 of avoidable fruit & vegetables wasted in UK

Estimated tonnage of waste per annum

Numbers of avoidable fruit & vegetables wasted per day

Apples

179000

4,400,000

Potatoes

177000

1,600,000

Tomatoes

2,800,000

Oranges

So, not only should we be concerned about the environmental impact of intensive food production and the food miles incurred in importing so much........ we now learn that we then throw it away!!!!!! All of that unnecessary carbon emitted in production, packaging and transportation.

Have you seen Oxfam's Green Granny vids on YouTube? In the first one she talked about handling leftovers, although her recipes were not always to the taste of the younger generation (represented by three schoolkids).

Personally I think leftover food are a great way to excersise my creative side;
"Hm I got a spoon of sauce bolognese, some ricepudding and half a cup of fruitsallad left - what do I make of that?"
The answer, in my case, is that the sauce is put on a sandwich, the ricepudding in a meat loaf and the fruitsallad is devoured as a treat when noone is home... :)
