Save our sparrows

Day 111 #365DaysWild

Sandy Oaks Save our Sparrows project update.

We’re trying to boost the population of house sparrows at the Sandy Oaks village.

So far you’ve helped us surveying Sandy Oaks for

house sparrows.

Sandy Oaks has provided exterior grade plywood and some fixings for boxes.

My brother-in-law Roger Pearson has allowed us to use his workshop for our ‘production line’ of nest boxes.
Roger

Thanks to my sister Judith for refreshments.

Sandy Oaks residents Dave, Lindy, Pam and Ray have joined us in making house sparrow nest boxes.

Everyone enjoyed themselves and said they’d come back!

We’ve now got all the boxes put together with just a few metal hole protectors needed and a final quality control check.

Ellie is putting together a list of those wanting to adopt a box.

If you adopt a box we’d like your permission to monitor your box in your garden in the breeding season and to put little rings on any juveniles legs. This doesn’t harm the birds and is equivalent in weight and bulk to us wearing a wrist watch.

We expect to provide guidance for box adopters.

Bird ringers Mike & Rich have volunteered to join us with box checks in the breeding season.

Next up will be helping residents to site boxes - all help appreciated.

Don’t hesitate to be in touch if you want to know more.

With best wishes

Rob
