Sparrow support ..
Day 170 #365DaysWild
House sparrows are now on the red list of birds of conservation concern.
They return to the site of their birth for breeding.
Isolated populations can be especially vulnerable.
We’ve decided to give them a helping hand on the nearby Sandy Oaks retirement Village by providing nest sites in the form of nest boxes in residents’ gardens.
Thirty two nest boxes now sited in the Sandy Oaks retirement village.
….
on fences, sheds, trees, roof timbers and walls.
Residents are encouraged to continue to feed the birds through the winter with reminders about feeder hygiene.
We wait for the spring when we’ll check boxes and ring chicks with possible use of coloured leg rings to help us study bird movement.
