Or, in our family ‘Balance Time Day’. Naively misheard and misunderstood by a two year old granddaughter. Forever ‘Balance Time Day’ for us.

But back to our story..

Mild, wet night in February.

My torch disturbs roosting wood pigeons which clatter away.

Mallards fire skywards from the reeds.

Male toads are on the move on the lane. Looking for love. Much earlier than other years.

Smaller than females.

The males return early to get the prime places in the pond. Where the prettiest girls will gather.

I search the edges of George’s Pond.

Poor photo, but our first male toad this year.
