cordwood at tatton park

Wood and its grain are beautiful. Here, the tree rings, the differences in bark and colour and size of different logs makes a very satisfying wall and was part of a show garden at the RHS Tatton Park show at the weekend.
It is similar to the American cordwood building system which uses sawn logs. The cordwood system sees the debarked and seasoned logs held together with mortar. This more informal wall can use green timber and the time consuming business of stripping the bark isn't necessary.
It is a striking effect.
