the foundation is cast...

Friday was a landmark day: the foundation raft for Waxwings bungalow was completed. A series of lorries poured liquid concrete into the 'mould' that had been created by a single course of blocks. The team then worked to spread the concrete , ensuring that no air pockets were left within the grid of tied steel that might compromise its strength. The concrete was finally smoothed.


A raft was considered the best option for both bungalows due to the sandy nature of the site. Concrete is one of the worst materials for 'embodied energy'. Large quantities of carbon are released into the atmosphere during its production. It is our hope that the carbon footprint will be negated during the lifetime of the building by its reduced carbon emissions.

Next we agree costings for the build of the outer shell: walls, roof, windows and first fix electrics and plumbing...
