Little owls …

Day 342 #365DaysWild

Few satisfactions match
making a nest box..

siting it…

and then ringing generations of young.

The box we checked today was made and sited in November 2017.
It has been used each year by a breeding pair. This year the clutch was five young. I’m guessing that amounts to around thirty youngsters fledged since I built the box.

Little owls aren’t native. Mainly insectivorous, enjoying worms and the occasional small mammals.

They’re exceptional for an introduced animal as they don’t appear to have jostled any other animals out of their niche.

Their impact appears to have been completely benign.

Gorgeous little birds. I love to hear their piping calls at night.
