RSPB Bempton Cliffs

Tree sparrow during
licensed bird ringing
Day 348 #365DaysWild

To RSPB Bempton Cliffs, near Bridlington, Yorkshire.

The English cathedral of cliff nesting birds.

Gannet. Fulmar. Kittiwake. Guillemot. Razorbill. Puffin. Rick Dove. All on cliff shelves or in clouds over the sea.

All present the thousands of human visitors with amazing views of some of our most-amazing birds.

If the photos taken could be the old-fashioned ‘scratch and sniff’ variety, the impression would be complete.

On arrival, you’re greeted by a unique and pungent aroma of salt & fish..

But here’s a thing.

RSPB Bempton Cliffs has acres of wildflower meadows being quartered by day-flying barn owls.

No. No. That’s wonderful, but it’s not the thing.

The thing is the tree sparrows. I’ve never been anywhere with so many of these pretty little birds. Chocolate-topped with a beauty spot.

They’re around the visitor centre, on the feeders and abundantly throughout the luxuriant meadows.

Us Carlyle’s ain’t known for being loose with our cash. We keep it tight!

But although I’m a member and already pay my membership I just had to seek a volunteer out and stuff a big note into her hands as a donation. We must celebrate the great work of the RSPB at Bempton.

Go there.
