Shaggy

Day 108 #365DaysWild

Nosing through the ground.

It’s the time for shaggy ink cap mushrooms.

Edible at first but maturing to hold court as the be-wigged judges of the lawn.

As they begin to appear we cease mowing in that area to encourage their brief display and to encourage successful release of spores.

When spores have been released, the mushroom simply turns to a black liquid and returns to the soil - deliquescence.

Our highest ink cap total was in October 2020 when we had 120 emerge on the lawn.

We have loads growing on the rough ground at work. I think they are edible for about 30 seconds!

‘All mushrooms are edible - once!!’ Better to leave and just enjoy seeing them.
